Background of the Study
Political rhetoric in Nigeria is a complex interplay of linguistic features that shape public opinion and influence policy debates. This study examines the morphosyntactic structures in political speeches, focusing on a comparative analysis of speech transcripts from various political contexts. Nigerian political rhetoric is characterized by a blend of indigenous language influences and formal English, resulting in unique syntactic constructions and morphological adaptations (Ibrahim, 2023). The research will analyze features such as clause structure, verb conjugation, and the use of cohesive devices that contribute to the overall persuasive power of political discourse. By comparing speeches across different political actors and settings, the study seeks to identify patterns that underpin effective argumentation and ideological framing. The findings are expected to provide insights into how morphosyntactic structures support or undermine political messaging and to offer recommendations for improving clarity and consistency in political communication (Olatunde, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although Nigerian political speeches are widely analyzed for content and rhetorical style, there is limited research on the underlying morphosyntactic structures that shape these discourses. This gap in the literature restricts our understanding of how linguistic structures influence the effectiveness of political communication. Without a systematic analysis of speech transcripts, the role of morphosyntax in conveying political messages and constructing public narratives remains underexplored. Addressing this issue is critical for developing strategies that improve the clarity and impact of political rhetoric, thereby contributing to a more informed electorate (Ibrahim, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze morphosyntactic structures in Nigerian political speeches.

  2. To compare these structures across different political contexts.

  3. To evaluate their impact on message clarity and persuasion.

Research Questions

  1. What morphosyntactic features are common in Nigerian political speeches?

  2. How do these features vary across political actors and settings?

  3. How do morphosyntactic structures affect the persuasiveness of political rhetoric?

Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the linguistic foundations of political rhetoric, benefiting political analysts, linguists, and policymakers. The findings will inform strategies for enhancing clarity and effectiveness in political communication (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to comparing morphosyntactic structures in Nigerian political speeches and does not include other forms of political discourse.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Morphosyntax: The study of the interaction between morphological and syntactic structures.

  2. Political Rhetoric: The language used to persuade and influence public opinion in political contexts.

  3. Speech Transcripts: Written records of spoken political discourse.
